Broken Microwave. Fix or Buy a New One?
My 3 year old full size microwave is broken. Is it worth fixing or should I just buy a new one? If I get it fixed, I'm afraid the cost is the same as buying, and the problem might come back. Help...
Microwaves tend to need their light bulbs to be functioning for the microwave to function correctly. It has something to do with the way the circuits are run. Some microwaves are unsafe to operate when their light bulbs are burn out. And, I understand that some of the newer microwaves are set up to not operate if their light bulbs are burn out. - Checking the light bulb may be another low cost option.
In general, it seems as if microwaves are designed to be disposable. Among other things, it seems as if about every five years the features on the higher end, general appliance types have made it down to the models that go on seasonal, special buy, types of prices. Still, it's hard to swallow the concept of replacing a 3 year old, full sized microwave. - Ours must be close to 15 years old and still does what we ask of it.
On the other hand, every three to five years there are some definite changes in microwave features. Last year our friend's 25-30 year old microwave finially bit the dust: the light bulb had burnt out some time earlier, no one knew it needed to be replaced for reasons other than convience, and it poofed smoke on its last use. In the end, we all decided that a microwave with convection oven was the way to go.
At the time it cost about $120-$140. And, it is wonderful. It uses much less energy than a full oven, takes much less time to do traditional types of baked items, and generates much less off-heating.
I haven't quite convinced myself that I really need one yet.....the existing microwave is still working quite well. But, if things keep going ok financially, this coming year I think I will be definitely be looking at one for myself too.
