Dremel 395 only working intermittently?
Figured I'd see if anyone had an idea about a problem I'm having with my Dremel before I sent it in for repairs. I have the model 395 multi-speed one, and was trying to use it today and it won't stay on unless I push on the brush covers. I opened them up and replaced the carbon motor brushes and springs on both sides (they weren't particularly worn but changed it anyway), and it's still doing the same thing. It works intermittently if I either press on both brush covers, or press on the speed switch. I'm going to pop it open to see if anything obvious pops out at me, but if not I'll just send it in for repair. It's not too expensive, but it's a cost I would obviously like to avoid if anyone here has any ideas what the problem might be. I figure there's more than a few Dremel users here

First of all, the repair might cost more than its worth, so I'd take it apart to see what's loose before even considering it. There's probably a connection that has worked itself apart because if it were the cord it would be intermittent when you moved that. My guess is there's somewhere a wire is not connected to what it is supposed to be and it should be fairly obvious. I hope.
Some small motors have wires that are connected to the brush holders with springs and those can loosen up or another connection has failed. I assume it isn't arcing and sparking when it does run because that would indicate the armature is shot, but it wouldn't allow it to be controlled by squeezing the brush holders. Look for burnt or discolored wires or evidence of the housing getting too hot.
